This is a list of songs about Alaska. I have never been but it is certainly a place that appeals to me. Most songs added to this list are country or folk songs, with the exception of 1 heavy metal style song and 1 baroque pop song.
- Folk – Black Irish Band – Alaska
Melodic harmonies, a description of the beautiful Alaskan landscape, this song has it all.
- Country Music – Johnny Horton – North To Alaska
This is an old fashioned country music song that tells a story of heading to Alaska, finding gold, mushing through the snow with a team of huskies, seeing the northern lights and wishing to find true love.
- Folk Rock -Joe and Bing – Alaska Bloodline
This song makes mention of a lot of the well known places throughout Alaska and wanting to go back there.
- Musical Theatre – Adam Gwon – Alaska
This song depicts a light-hearted view about a friend who has moved to Alaska. In this case, the pure fact of choosing to move to Alaska is questioned.
- Country Music – Johnny Horton – Springtime In Alaska
The moral of this song, as I see it, is that spring time in Alaska is very very cold. Although I have yet not figured out the quite unhappy last verse.
- Death Metal – Between The Buried And Me – Alaska
This is quite a different sound to any other song on this list, and in fact, a different sound to any song on any other lists added so far. (I admit it, I am not the biggest fan of heavy metal.) The lyrics are not extremely reflective of Alaskan landscape, history or way of life. But Alaska is mentioned quite loudly quite a few times.
- Baroque Pop – Dr Dog – Alaska
An interesting song about Alaska which talks about having trouble getting a fire started, a drunk donkey and pointing out that in Alaska it’s dark for the Whole winter.
This is a list of the most well known songs about Australia. There are songs that describe the amazing landscape and culture and some songs that narrate some history.
Songs About Australia – The Best-Known List
- Country Folk – Waltzing Matilda
This is probably the best known Australian country folk song, the words to which were written in 1895 by Banjo Patterson. It is the story of an itinerant worker who steals a sheep, gets caught and sentenced to hanging. Instead he commits suicide and then haunts the site where he was caught for ever more.
- Paul Allen – I Still Call Australia Home
Because of a certain airline company, this could well be the best known song about Australia.
- Rock – Great Southern Land – Icehouse
This song describes some of the wonderful landscapes found in Australia.
- Pop – Christine Anu – My Island Home
This song is the story of one’s love affair with the Australian coastline, despite living in the city.
- Rock – Men At Work – Land Down Under
With references to the ‘fried out combie’ and ‘vegemite sandwiches’, this song really captures one man’s adventures travelling through Australia.
- Australian Rock – Paul Kelly – From Little Things Big Things Grow
This was a protest song, based on the story of the Gurindji Strike and Vincent Lingiari as part of the Indigenous Australians’ struggle for land rights and reconciliation.
- Indigenous Music/Rock – Yothu Yindi – Treaty
This song was written with the intention of highlighting the lack of progress on a promised treaty between Aboriginal people and the federal government in the early nineties.
Less-Known Songs About Australia and Australian Things
Many songs about Australia, great southern land, have been written over the years. These include songs such as “Great Southern Land” by Icehouse. But this is a quest to find the list of songs which to this day not only best represent Australia but are musically pleasing as well.
- Punk Rock – Pennywise – Land Down Under
This is quite a rockin’ cover of the Men at Work song, quite possible making it the coolest song about Australia.
- Folk Rock – The Waifs – Bridal Train
This track tells the story of Vikki, Donna Simpson’s grandmother, a war-bride of a sailor in the United States Navy. She boarded a train from Perth to Sydney to travell to San Francisco to meet her husband.
- Hip Hop – The Herd – I was Only 19
This song was originally released in 1983 by Redgum. At the time, the song hit number one and remained in the charts for a long time.
The song describes a typical Australian infantry regular soldier’s experience in the Vietnam War.
- Piano Rock – Ben Folds – Adelaide
Having spent quite a bit of time living in Adelaide, I can verify this song’s accuracy =). It’s also pretty cool when a famous artist like Ben Folds writes a song about your town, especially when this town is not really widely heard of internationally.
- Pop Rock – The Beautiful Girls – Under A Southern Sky
This is a beautiful song describing some typical Australian summer landscapes as well as traditions. It is more specific to Sydney, but I am sure all Australians can relate to stunning sunsets, the beach and watching cricket
- Australian Hip Hop – The Get Up Mob – From Little Things Big Things Grow
This is a cover of the Paul Kelly classic. It is about the Australian Reconciliation and what it means to say sorry.
Compiling a list of the best songs about New York is not easy. Over the years, many artists have been inspired to write songs about this wonderful city. Taking just a quick look around, it is easy to see where such varied inspiration has come from. There are happy, cheerful songs about romance in the city. There are songs about big hopes, or making it big. There are songs about it’s dark side. There are songs about just how tough life in New York can be. Here are 6 songs that all tell their very own New York story.
- Alternative Rock – They might be giants – New York City
Overall, this could well be my favourite song about New York City but it’s not always applicable. It puts me in a great mood every time I hear it. I love the energy and the romantic story it tells.
- Alternative Rock – Vampire Weekend – A Punk
I have only recently found this song was about New York. Before, I was just a fan of it’s cheerful melody, even though the song is really not that ‘cheery’. From the lyrics, it is hard to understand the story exactly. But, Johanna, somewhat of a sketchy character, arrives in New York in winter and stole back a ring that had special meaning to her.
- Dance Punk – LCD Sound System – New York I love you but you’re bringing me down
This is certainly not the happiest song about New York with lyrics such as “like a rat in a cape, pulling a minimum wage”.
- R & B – Alicia Keys – Streets of New York.
I thought I would sneak this one on here. It is not often an R & B song finds its way to my favourites list. This song tells a story about a totally different New York than the other songs. The chorus is also quite catchy.
- Alternative Rock – U2 – City of Blinding Lights
Part of the influence in writing this song, came from U2′s experience of playing in New York City in the aftermath of the September 11 attacks. In 2006, this song won a Grammy for ‘Best Rock Song’ and it has featured in several movies and episodes.
- Pop Punk – Something Corporate – I Woke Up In a Car
A great one for the Something Corporate fans. This song is about their tour to the area a few years back.
